Free Flowing Energy: A Juicing Journey

Today starts a new journey for me and Jeff. We’re starting a juice fast. I’m excited. This is totally unlike anything we’ve ever done – we’re not into fad lifestyle changes. We don’t make changes to our routine often or quickly. This is different. Recently we watched the movie “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” and when it was over we looked at each other said, “Let’s Juice!” The supposed health benefits are unbeatable. We were ready to shake up our lifestyle a bit and put it on a healthier track. We were ready for more energy.

We bought a juicer (a Breville) and for a week now we’ve been drinking juice for breakfast and lunch while enjoying a healthy dinner. It’s working out for us, so we’re ready to take the next step on our journey: a total juice fast. According to those who have juiced before, the juice fast is the way to go. It gives your body a break from digesting foods and allows it to focus on repairing and renewing your whole self, head to toe. At the same time, you’re fueling your body with the vitamins and minerals that are found in raw vegetables and fruits.

In the past week of juicing for 2 meals a day I’ve noticed that my skin is softer and my mind is clearer. My energy level has soared and my weight has dropped. I can only imagine how much more I will experience on this total juice fast. I’ve often said that I wish I had 2 extra hours in every day to get things done. Now I feel as though I do. I’m thinking more clearly, so I’m able to make better decisions more quickly. I can do more at once without feeling confused or overwhelmed. And because I have more energy, I actually do get more done.

Jeff and I are experimenting with juice recipes. We’ve found we like to add fresh ginger to many of the juices for extra *zing* and flavor. Mint is another wonderful addition. Some people who juice say that lime is nice, but I haven’t found that to be true yet. My favorite juices are made with greens: Swiss Chard is my favorite green to juice. Apples, Swiss Chard and ginger make a delicious lunch. Carrots, beets and apples make a delicious breakfast.

How long will our fast last? I don’t know – we’re going to take it one day at a time and see what happens. Maybe a week? I’ll be providing updates on our progress here.

    We had talked about it off and on, I come from a family who didn’t care anything about healthy diets or natural living and my husband’s mother on the other hand is pretty opposite of that. We hadn’t begun juicing yet but I think this documentary was the push that I needed to get going! How are you feeling with it? Still going through detox or are you coming up over the ledge? :)

      This past week was exactly what I needed to get started. I juiced for breakfast and lunch but still ate dinner. I LOVE eating dinner. I got to keep the dinner ritual and also have a sneak peak at how good I would feel during the juice fast. Today is my first full day of only drinking juice and water. It was hard to make dinner for my children and not for myself! I wanted to sit and eat but had a juice instead, used mind over matter, and I think I am going to be OK for the rest of the night.
      I keep thinking about how great I’m going to feel when I wake up tomorrow – that is keeping me going!
