I drank the Kool Aid

I drank the Kool-Aid – literally. It’s my secret medicine.

This year has been a bad one for colds and the flu in our area. As Jeff said, it’s like someone dropped a germ bomb on the entire Capital District. On Sunday I got home from church and knew I was coming down with something. Everything inside me told me to go to bed, but our first ski lesson was that afternoon and I did not want to miss it. I’m learning how to ski this year, after taking snowboarding lessons in the past. Skiing isn’t as cool as snowboarding, but then again, I’m not as cool as a 20 year old kid. Skiing seems more appropriate. :)

By the time the lesson was over, I was ready for bed. I took my honion syrup (a syrup recipe I got from a friend – you steep onion in honey on low heat, then strain the onions out. What you’re left with is healthy cough syrup). I drank tea made with mullein and sage, both good herbs for chest colds. By then I had a climbing fever, huge headache, runny nose, cough, no taste buds and all that good stuff. I was sick. I tucked myself in to bed at dinnertime with a lot of water glasses at my side and got up the next morning to let the chickens out at dawn. Oooh it is so hard to get up when you have the flu and let the chickens out! You suspect you might die if you move a limb in bed and know you will definitely die if you get out of bed, and not only do you have to get up, but you have to go outside and take care of another being. When it is close to zero degrees out there.

I knew I had to start taking Kool-Aid if I was going to get better. I bought some at the little store down the road and drank a big glass. The magic started to happen very quickly. My fever dropped a bit and I felt like I could eat a few bites for lunch. I tucked myself back into bed with another glass. My fever went down more and more. Dinnertime came and I had a nibble, happy I could stomach some food. Then, when that time of the evening arrived, the time when fevers in the sick bodies of all ages go up again, mine went away completely and I got hungry!

I am fever-free and much better this morning. Clear skies ahead.

It was amazing for me to witness it. How does it work? I have no idea. Kool-Aid contains citric acid, and that kills the influenza virus. So I guess I gave myself a mega dose and it worked. All told, I probably drank 5 or 6 glasses. It also works wonders when you have the stomach bug (or like issue) and you can’t keep anything down. That’s how I first learned about it.

Today I am on the mend and back to Chamomile tea as my beverage of choice. I’m appreciating my health, and that good feeling you have when you turn the corner.

To health!
