Mary is molting – our first chicken to do so. I don’t know why, but I had it in my head that they wouldn’t molt until next fall, a year from now. Imagine my surprise when I looked at her today and saw that she looked a little raggedy. All those feathers I found in the coop this morning must have come from her. She hasn’t been laying eggs in the past few days, and molting explains it. She’s exactly 8 months old. Young for molting, but not too young. It’s late fall and the daylight is waning.
Way to go, Mary!
